The Push Play Neighbourhood Project is in its fourth year of implementation in the Warkworth District (Warkworth, Matakana, Leigh, Mahurangi East, Kaipara Flats and surrounding areas). The aim of the project is to increase physical activity levels within the community and build healthy connected communities through sport and recreation.
Harbour Health is currently supporting the local Warkworth and Districts Push Play Collective to coordinate the project. Our Healthy Communities Coordinator supports the collective to develop resources, attract funds to the area, run local programmes and events and build links with local and regional organizations. We also try to build links with the local community and our Harbour Health programmes.
Mission of the Collective
The members of the collective will work together to develop, implement and evaluate the outcomes of, joint actions to promote physical activity and sport in our community.
Goals of Collective
♦ Promote a sense of community through physical activity and sport.
♦ Inform the Warkworth and Districts community about the scope, role and activities of Warkworth and Districts Push Play Collective and other community activities.
♦ Promote and encourage increased levels of physical activity and sport in the Warkworth and Districts region;
With just 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week we can all feel better and be healthier. Regular physical activity can reduce the risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure and being overweight. Regular physical activity is also well documented to promote better mental health and those working with this project believe sport and recreation also strengthens communities. Harbour Health are supporting this project while the collective works to attract funds locally and eventually become sustainable. This is a community development approach to increasing physical activity and we have had some great achievements so far. In 2010 the Collective has received funding to employ a Community Sports Coach to increase children’s participation in sport and build confidence amongst teachers and parents in participating in children’s sport alongside them. We now have a range of activities, a strong local network and a supportive environment all in place to assist anyone who wants to be more active in doing so.
