Primary Options is an Acute Care Program which was launched in 2001.
The aim of Primary Options is to assist general practice teams to manage acutely unwell patients in the community where it is appropriate to do so, for up to 3-4 days, on a budget of $300 per episode. (excluding Accident related conditions)
Services could include:
- Radiology (X-ray and Ultrasound).
- GP and practice nurse services
- Home help
- Rest home care (maximum stay 3 days)
- Home visiting Physiotherapy for acute respiratory conditions
- Some equipment hire
Referrals are initiated by the patients general practitioner or colleague, accident and medical doctor, or from a hospital emergency department for selected cases of cellulitis.
The Primary Options Clinical Team has developed three sets of guidelines for use in primary care, these are: Management of Adult Dehydration, Management of diagnosis of suspected Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Treatment of Cellulitis, for which we won Highly Commended Group Category in the 2005 New Zealand Health Innovation Awards.
