Weight is measured by body mass index (BMI):
- weight(kg) or waist circumference
- height(m2)
A BMI over 25 or waist over 88cm (female) or 102cm (male) indicates excess weight.
This is a risk factor for chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
Benefits of a 10% weight reduction are:
- more than a 20% fall in total mortality
- more than a 30% reduction in diabetes-related deaths
- more than a 40% reduction in obesity-related cancer deaths.
How to achieve this? Start by:
- reducing fat and sugar intake
- having regular meals with consistent carbohydrate (high fibre, low GI)
- making physical activity part of your day
