Obesity

Weight is measured by body mass index (BMI):

  • weight(kg)  or waist circumference
  • height(m2)

A BMI over 25 or waist over 88cm (female) or 102cm (male) indicates excess weight.

This is a risk factor for chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Benefits of a 10% weight reduction are:

  • more than a 20% fall in total mortality
  • more than a 30% reduction in diabetes-related deaths
  • more than a 40% reduction in obesity-related cancer deaths.

How to achieve this? Start by:

  • reducing fat and sugar intake
  • having regular meals with consistent carbohydrate (high fibre, low GI)
  • making physical activity part of your day
